Yankees Win Most Recent Battle

By Dylan Groesch

After a few years of rubbing it in the faces of Yankees fans (and most of 2009), fans of the Red Sox were dealt a sharp blow last week when the team was swept in a four game showdown at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees built their lead from 2.5 games to 6.5, and the Red Sox scored very few runs in the process. In fact, they went over two games without a run before Victor Martinez hit a two-run blast.

It was all for naught! Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira hit back to back home runs and the Sox saw their 2.5 game deficit turn into 6.5 games in a New York minute. Not only that, but the Sox now have the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays to fend off in the wild card chase.

The Red Sox have now lost 6 in a row and must face the heart of the Tigers' pitching staff at Fenway through the course of the week.

Boston typically goes through lulls like this each season, but it usually relates to an overall team slump. This year, fans can point their fingers at injury issues to the team's starting pitching staff.

Granted, I am not a die hard Sox/baseball fan anymore. Those days were stolen from me on an October night in 1986 against the other New York team. However, I hate losing to the Yankees and getting swept by them is really like getting kicked in the groin.

The Yankees/Red Sox rivalry is one again in full effect. After losing the first 8 games of the season to Boston, New York struck back - and in a big way.

With an injured pitching staff, the lack of offense on Boston's part in New York was unacceptable. With bats like Big Papi, the newly acquired Victor Martinez, Dustin Pedroia, and a few more respectable hitters, there's no reason the Sox shouldn't be scoring runs left and right, regardless of their starting pitching situation.

Remember Sox fans. Darth Vader and the Emperor bought it in the end! As will the Yankees! Viva los Sox!
