Errors You Commit In Playing Poker: Entitlement

By Aeolus Jirou

The sense of entitlement has been a wonder for a long time. Do people really obtain what they are worthy of? If we do the correct actions are we going to achieve an incentive for it? Do our bad actions stay unpunished? In a world of idealism, you will gain what you deserved. But now, it seems like things have gone awry, we get what we're not supposed to get.

For instance, an individual who return a wallet or a bag of cash to the respectful owner expecting that he will be gain a reward in return. But the truth of the matter is that a lot of money has been returned- with the individual returning it gaining nothing but a solemn thank you.

At school you grind yourself to study the subject you like and just skim through the subject you don't like much expectant that you'll get high results for your hard work. But it turned out that you got an ace on the subjects you only skimmed and a passing grade for the subjects you burn your candles on.

Employees who are working hard expect that they will get a salary grade and then luckily a promotion at their respective work. But it is a fact that a lot of deserving people got ignored during promotions and many diligent employees got laid off and their salaries cut.

The point here is that although we think that we deserve more, it is probable that will get a totally different result.

One good example of a poker entitlement would be Phil Hellmuth. He is known for his declaration, "If it wasn't for luck, I guess I'd win them all." This individual deems that having a good game plan give him the right to win. These days he acknowledge that luck has a part in the game but it won't be denied that he still believes that a weak hand will be crushed by a strong one every time.

This view makes Phil not take into account the other factors vital in the game. One good instance would be his outburst against poker pro Adam "Roothlus" Levy during the 2008 WSOP Main Event. This situation happens right at the start of the game where both players have deep stacks. Hellmuth raise with 99 and then Levy called with QTs. As the game progress, Phil hit a set with a 9 but Levy got the nut straight. Obviously, Phil loses in the game and then rant against Levy and belittled his game play. The reality is that Levy gave an outstanding play: Hellmuth was so distracted because of his discomfort for having the best hand by having the set but still end up loosing. This instance makes him permit to ignore the game in general because of his sense of entitlement.

They have both been deep stacks during the game, Levy had position and Phil's been known as a loose player. Hellmuth even commented subsequent to his river bet "Could I be good enough to play QT like this?" It only signifies that his range included a QT also but he still called Levy stupid for playing the said hand.

Being a good poker player means leaving all your sense of entitlement behind. All you need to do is to put your money in a worthwhile hand and then let the chips fall in. It is usual that your good hands will undermine a better end and your poor cards will yield better results, but it will be even out in the end.

There's only one thing that you are entitled in the poker table and that would be you'll be dealt with cards. Following that all the things that will occur will depend on your own choices and of course luck. Keep in mind that in long run your choices will conclude the result of your games: Fate will only determine when you win.
