How To Make The Most Of Your Official Recruiting Visits

By Coach Chris Berg

Have you scheduled all 5 of your official recruiting visits? It is important as you begin to schedule your official visits that you keep in mind that these are business trips. I know there are a lot of stories out there about how much FUN your recruiting visits are and don't get me wrong they are A TON of fun, but it is critical that you approach them as a business trip.

Years ago, when I took my recruiting visit to Stanford I had a great time. It was a ton of fun meeting great players from all over the country. Coach Green teamed me up with a great player on the team to show me around campus and Palo Alto. I had an amazing trip, and the key is that the entire time I stayed focused on keeping it a business trip.

Why is this important?

One of the first things a coach will do once you leave is call the person that hosted you on your trip and find out all about you from your host. He will grill the person with questions such as:

Do you think he would fit into our program?

Does he seem like a kid that can fit into our program?

How did he behave when you were out and about?

These are obviously just a few questions a coach will ask your host...and bottom line he wants to get a feel for you as a student-athlete. Most importantly he wants to know if you will be a positive contribution to the program.

KEY STRATEGIES ON A RECRUITING TRIP:

1. PREPARE: Write down all your questions before your trip, so when you get on campus you are prepared to get your questions answered.

2. ALWAYS do the right thing when you are on campus. Your host may take you to places that will put you in tempting situations. DO NOT take the bait...keep your head on straight and do the right thing.

3. Visit with as many current players as possible. They will be able to give you a GREAT feel of the college and its program.

4. Also, be sure to talk to as many students as possible as well. You can learn a lot from talking to the student body.
