10 Years of Indie Rock

By Brian Jordan

It's really unbelievable to think about the fact that another decade is coming to an end. There were many defining characteristics of this decade in the world of news, technology, and more. In the music world, it came down to indie rock, and breed of music that's still in full force.

Looking back at the 1990s, the alternative rock era began to lose steam at the end of the decade. In fact, it may have very well morphed into the indie movement, as many alternative fans most likely began to show an interest in indie rock as they grew tiresome of the alternative scene.

With so many bands that were strong at the beginning of the decade still producing quality music, it's clear that the indie genre is far more expansive than nearly any musical movement we've seen in quite some time.

As far as the definition of indie rock is concerned, you might get a different answer if you ask any single music lover. Some would say that it's a frame of mind, and some might be more technical in saying that it means the band is signed to an independent label - or no label at all.

Most would agree that indie rock bands make their music with the goal of making great music. This is a breath of fresh air in a world that was dominated by songs specifically engineered for top 40 radio for way too long.

The inventiveness remains strong and many bands continue to polish their sounds, chartering into musical territory that's never been explored before.

The music world couldn't be more grateful for this. More and more bands continue to fall into the indie music category as the decade nears its end, and it's clear that the indie rock movement will be at the forefront of the music scene for quite some time.

Just as classic rock made a deep footprint in the 1960s and the 1970s, indie rock may very well define the next decade too.
