Have You Ever Found Yourself In A Survival Situation?

By Steve Thibeault

None of us ever think it will happen to us, but unfortunately at some stage doing our life we are going to come across a survival or medical situation. The odds are that this is especially likely to happen if we are in a remote or outback environment, such as on a camping trip or expedition of some kind. However, living in the United States, most of us are prone to some kind of natural disaster or other and can also find ourselves in a survival situation caused by mother nature.

Always be prepared and have a specially thought out plan to help your family get through a survival situation, should it arise. It would be no good trying to plan when something is upon you and so you should think all eventualities through and make sure that you address all potential hazards as best as you can.

There's nothing worse than the feeling of vulnerability when you are involved in a particularly harrowing situation. Make sure that you have an emergency survival kit which will certainly be of benefit to you as you wait for professional help to arrive or to get rescued.

There are a variety of different types of survival kit available including those specifically designed for use in the wilderness, to be carried in your vehicle or left at home or to be used in any environment for medical first aid. Many people think they only need a first aid kit if they're going into the remote backcountry, but you should keep one handy during every facet of your life.

Every type of survival situation is different, but you will almost invariably need shelter, first aid, fire, food and water to get you through it. If you have a typical family of four, you should invest in an emergency survival kit designed for that family size, which can sustain you for up to 72 hours and get you through your situation if needed.

You will not always have adequate notice of an impending disaster. While a hurricane can be tracked and we will have plenty of advance warning, other weather phenomena such as a flash flood, tornado or earthquake will strike without warning. As such, you should have a comprehensive survival kit in a known location and every member of the family should be aware.

Don't think that it will never happen to you, as you could be in a survival situation at any time without any notice. It will be too late to worry about that when it is already upon you.

Experienced adventurers will always make sure that they carry the appropriate gear at all times. There is adequate choice for every situation and you can pick up a multi-person kit or just a pocket pak, but just be sure that you are prepared for any kind of survival situation.
